OBJECTIVE

The main objective behind starting this shalla is to encourage our childeren to SPEAK in Marathi.

They should become capable of conducting meaningful conversations in Marathi, after finishing this Shalla. Reading and writing in the Devanagari script is also given significant importance. We should be mindful that our children are after all growing up in an environment and culture quite different from the one most of us grew up in. English is always going to be their first, and therefore the language of choice in all media of expression. It will be unrealistic for us to expect them to be prolific writers in Marathi. However, they can certainly be bilingual or trilingual, speaking English, Spanish (and/or French or German) and Marathi with equal ease.

Since they are growing up in an English speaking society they would obviously speak English like the locals (accent and composition). We strongly believe that if we continue to interact with them, at least partially, in Marathi, right from their early childhood, they will not only be able to speak Marathi effectively but speak it without any accent. They are also quite capable of learning the Devanagari script and read and write short essays, letters etc. We also hear that these days Marathi studies can be pursued in US Universities including some of the Ivy League ones.

Hence the efforts put in by the students and their parents (in addition to those of the teachers) may go well beyond merely achieving socio-cultural ambitions.

Although our Shalla is based on the above beliefs, we also know (now from experience) that meeting the children for an hour a week is simply not enough to achieve these goals. We strongly urge and earnestly request all parents who share these objectives with us, to maintain some level of Marathi content in their daily home conversations. Also get involved with their homework.

CLASSES

BALWADEE  - This class is considered as the beginning for a student’s quest for Marathi education. Keeping this concept/focus in perspective, the class may, at times, consist of older kids. Typically a student newly joining our Shalla is expected to start in this class. At the request of their parents, new students, especially older students, may be evaluated for their Marathi skills. We encourage them to join our higher classes if their ability is proven appropriate for those classes. Notwithstanding this, most students in this class are in the 6-8 age-group. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the student population of this class, it is taught in a free-format. This class is taught by Uday Sawant (udayshala@gmail.com

KILBIL (Level 1 and 2) - Kilbil has two classes. These classes consists of children ranging from about 7-9 years of age. Kilbil 1 is taught by Amrita Deodhar (amritashala@gmail.com) and Kilbil 2 is taught by Medha Rajamanur (advmash@gmail.com).

KISHOR (Level 3) - This class consists of children between the ages of 9 to 13 (some older). Most of these children can speak fluent Marathi. This class is taught by Sunita Choudhari (sunitapchoudhari@gmail.com).

KISHOR (Level 4 and 5) - These class consists of children between the ages of 12 to 14 (some older). This class is taught by Shirish Nadkarni (srncontent@gmail.com).
